Publication ethics
“Historia et ius. Medieval and modern legal history review” it’s a scientific review peer-reviewed based on the ethical code of publications elaborated by COPE: Best Practice Guidelines for Journals Editors.
All people involved – authors, editors and referees – must know and share the following ethical requirements.
Management and editors’ duties
Decisions upon the publication
“Historia et ius” editors are responsible as far as concern the decision to publish or not the essays which are submitted to the editorial staff. Editors can consult referees in order to take that decision.
Fairness
Editors will evaluate the submitted essay on the basis of the content with no prejudice as far as concern authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnic origin, citizenship, political orientation.
Privacy
Editors and other members of the staff will not release any information concerning submitted essays to anyone but the author, the referees and the editor.
Conflict of interest and disclosure
Editors will not use in their own research contents from submitted essays without the approval of the author.
Referees’ duties
Contribution to the editorial decision
The peer-review is a procedure which helps the editors to take decisions on the submitted essays and helps the author to improve their work.
Timeliness
The referee who feels to be inadequate regarding to the work assigned or knows that he will not be able to complete the evaluation on time must promptly inform the editorial staff.
Privacy
Each essay assigned for the evaluation must be considered as confidential. Therefore, the essay cannot be discussed without the explicit approval of the editors.
Objectivity
The peer-review must be conducted with objectivity. Each private judgment on the author will be considered as inappropriate. The referees must justify any judgment.
Observation on the essays
The referees will accurately recommend any bibliographical reference that the author could have omitted. The referee must also inform the editors on any possible similarities regarding the essays that he is evaluating and any other essays.
Conflict of interest and disclosure
Private information or observation obtained during the peer-review process must be considered as confidential and they cannot be used for personal purpose. The referees must refuse any essays which might represent a conflict of interest regarding previous collaboration with the authors or/and his/her academic institute.
Authors’ duties
Access and preservation of the information
If it is required by the editors, the authors must communicate the sources and the information on which they base their essay in order to let them to be available and to preserve them.
Originality and plagiarism
Authors must declare that their work is completely original, and they quoted all the text used for their research.
Multiple publication, recurring and/or concurrent
The author shouldn’t publish the same articles on multiples reviews. To submit the same article at the same time represents an unfair and unacceptable behavior.
Sources
The author must always clearly quote the sources and the bibliography.
Authorship of the essay
Any co-author or whoever strongly contributed to the conception, organization, realization and adjustment of the essay must be indicated in order to properly attribute the authorship of the essay. If someone else participated to any phase of the research, his/her contribute must be recognized.
In case the is more than on authors, who submits the essay must declare that the name of the co-authors is accurately indicated and he must also obtain the permission by the other authors on the final version of the essay and on the submission to “Historia et ius”.
Conflict of interest and disclosure
Each author must declare that there is no conflict of interest which might have influenced their results and their observations. The authors must also mention any financing institute and/or any project regarding the essay.
Mistakes in published essays
Anytime an author finds a mistake or a relevant inaccuracy in their published essays, he must promptly inform the editorial staff and give them all information in order to correct it.
